By mid-July, I’ve already audited my sheet inventory, calculated raw material needs, and placed major supply orders for the upcoming Christmas season.
Planning half a year in advance might sound intense, but in the world of true artisan glass, it’s necessary—and it reveals a side of the holiday market that most shoppers never see.
The Summer Supply Rush (And the Mass-Production Illusion)
Every year starting in mid-summer, raw glass manufacturers face massive demand. Multi-person commercial factories and large-scale manufacturing operations buy up bulk shipments of raw sheet glass and frit.
From July through December, these commercial operations mass-produce thousands of identical ornaments to stock retail shelves and online marketplaces.
To make matters more confusing for shoppers, many of these mass-produced items are marketed with buzzwords like "artisan style," "craft," or "studio made," hiding the fact that they came off an assembly line, produced by their staff.
