In the early days of 2019, my studio was defined by one key piece of equipment: the "Hothead" torch. It was a humble, entry-level setup that allowed me to dip my toes into the world of lampworking. Looking back at our early inventory spreadsheets, where we were just starting to find our footing, those first few hundred pieces were created on that very torch. It taught me the absolute basics of heat control and patience.
However, as Gaia’s Glasswear grew and the designs became more intricate—moving from simple beads to the complex driftwood flowers and layered stud earrings you see today—my equipment had to evolve. The transition to a professional studio setup was a game-changer.
Today, my studio in Sherwood Park is equipped with high-temperature oxygen-propane torches that allow for a much faster, cleaner melt. This doesn't just make the work easier; it fundamentally changes the quality of the glass. Professional-grade torches allow for a richer color palette and finer detail work, as the flame can be precisely controlled to heat only the area I need to work on.
Beyond the torch, the studio is now filled with essential tools: graphite paddles for shaping, tungsten picks for fine detailing, and, perhaps most importantly, the digital kiln. The kiln is the "silent partner" in every piece of jewelry. It allows us to anneal glass properly, a process that is non-negotiable for high-quality, durable jewelry.
